Gautama Buddha was born into a wealthy family of the Shakya clan in the 6th c. BC, and is often referred to as Shakyamuni, sage of the Shakya clan.  His given name is Siddhartha Gautama.    As is typical for depictions of him, he is shown wearing plain dress with no adornments, except a jewel in his hair, symbolizing his renunciation of worldly ambition.  His right hand is in the earth touching mudra, calling the earth to witness his enlightenment, and his left hand is in the meditation mudra.  His hair is blue-black with a protuberance at the crown, and he has very long ears.  His hands are stained with henna.
